The simplicity of pneumatics is now combined for the first time with the advantages of electric automation thanks to the Festo Simplified Motion Series. These integrated drives are the perfect solution for all users who are looking for an electric alternative for very simple motion and positioning tasks, but don’t want the commissioning process for traditional electric drive systems that can often be quite complex.
Simple Electric Automation Solution
Simplified Motion Series
There are difficulties in the transition to electric automation technologies. It is understandable why the advantages of electric automation have so far been restricted to sophisticated motion requirements since they demand substantial understanding of electrical systems and software in addition to a sizable expenditure. This is now changing because Festo’s Simplified Motion Series offers you an automation solution that combines clever electric automation with simple pneumatics, bridging the gap between the two. Simply use plug and work to increase the productivity of your production.
The Simplicity of Pneumatics Combined with the Benefits of Electric Automation
Pneumatic systems are the ideal choice for simple movement and positioning tasks. Yet, electric automation enables continuous data flow from the workpiece to the controller all the way to the cloud, enabling you to hasten initial setup, make things more affordably, and handle shorter product life cycles. The Simplified Motion Series products are ideal for this need. They are constructed from several electromechanical components as well as an integrated actuator, motor, and controller coupled for a specific function. Without the need for an additional servo controller, the system may be started up fast and easily. The actuators are ideal for making quick changes between two mechanical end positions, including an intermediate position, while maintaining optimal motion characteristics, a gently cushioned entry into the end position, and efficient press-fitting and clamping procedures.
- Simplified functionality for simple movements
- A variety of movements with different mechanical systems
- Integrated products eliminate the need for a control cabinet
- Quick and easy initial setup without software – does not require special expertise
- Digital I/O (DIO) or IO-Link® integrated as standard

The advantages of electric automation are now combined for the first time with the ease of pneumatics thanks to the Simplified Motion Series. These integrated drives are the best option for any user looking for an electric replacement for relatively simple movement and positioning tasks without having to deal with the frequently challenging commissioning process for conventional electric drive systems.
Easy Commissioning Thanks to Plug and Work
The plug-and-work method, which enables all of the actuator's settings to be changed manually, makes commissioning unnecessary for computers or software. You can connect the Simplified Motion Series directly to the controller using either IO-Link® or digital I/O (DIO), both of which are provided as standard.
Available basic functions can be configured via digital I/O (DIO):
- Speed and force
- Reference end position and cushioning
- End positions
Additional, extended functions are available via IO-Link®:
- Remote configuration of motion parameters
- Copy and backup feature for transferring parameters between the actuator and a computer or from a computer to another identical actuator
- Read functions of the process parameters
- Firmware updates (including for all already installed products)
- Adjustable intermediate position
1. Initial Setup: To bring the system into operation, you configure all of the parameters directly on the integrated actuator – in a simple and intuitive process without the need for extensive or complex operating instructions:
- Speed for “out” and “in” movement
- Force of the actuator in the “out” position
- Setting the reference end position
- Setting the position “Start force-controlled movement”
- Manual start by simulating DIO signals (similar to manual override)
2. Electrical Connection
- Simple electrical connection with M12 connector technology
- Power (4-pin): power supply for the motor
- Logic (8-pin): control signal, sensor signal, and power for the integrated electronics
3. Intermediate Position: You can select an intermediate position via IO-Link and interrupt the movement at this defined position during the stroke. The actuator then moves on to the end position. This applies to both directions of movement.
